Step-by-step: Build your own Apple 1 computer

Attending this year’s KansasFest was Vince Briel, a man so in love with the Apple I that he sells licensed kits so that you could build your own, just like Steve Wozniak did. Called the Replica 1, each one goes for a modest $149 (quite a bit less than the $666.66 it originally launched for in 1976), though you’ll need at least a little bit of soldering skills and know-how of the inner workings of computers to put together its 88 components. Luckily for you and me, Computer World has an easy-to-follow, step-by-step guide to putting together Vince Briel’s Replica 1.

I-O Data’s SEG Clip brings 1seg mobile TV to iPhone and PC

Softbank’s own 1seg tuner / battery charger was a novel idea, but leave it to trained assassins at I-O Data to really expound upon the concept and concoct something nearly worthy of relocating to Tokyo for. The new GV-SC310 SEG Clip is a relatively vanilla USB 1seg TV tuner that plugs into one’s PC in order to pull down some of Japan’s finest OTA programming. Once captured, users with an iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS or iPod touch can download a TVPlayer app (shown after the break) that enables them to wirelessly watch whatever content they’ve stored

Prepare Yourselves: Augmented Reality Hype on the Rise

Augmented reality, or the concept that you can add an additional layer to the world before your eyes, aka the “real world,” using technology, is the next big tech trend. Already making its debut in everything from mobile apps to kids toys, it’s clear that soon everyone will be talking about “AR” they way they used to talk about “social media,” and previously “Web 2.0.” While augmented reality has its uses – although many of them just involve ooohing and aaahing at nifty apps – this trend is already in danger of being over-hyped even though it has barely gotten off the ground.

PlayOn media server now serving Wii customers (in beta, anyway)

We knew good and well that the fine folks over at MediaMall were toiling away in an attempt to bring internet TV content from YouTube, Hulu, Netflix, CBS, CNN and a host of other sources to Nintendo’s white-hot Wii , but there’s just nothing like hearing that intentions have become reality. Based on an email from MediaMall support to a particularly curious user, the “latest version of PlayOn includes a beta version of Wii functionality in it.” Naturally, the company’s doing its darnedest to keep this under wraps for now, but we’re eager to get legions of Wii users testing it out and reporting back with performance evaluations. The note does mention that quality will be lower than on the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 due to the inherit hardware limitations on Nintendo’s baby, but hey, you knew that going in , right?

Verismo’s VuNow set-top-box finally gets movie streaming

Verismo Networks may not boast the namesake of a Roku , Sony or LG , but its unassuming VuNow PoD just keeps getting more and more bonny. Priced at $99, this internet-to-TV media streamer makes it simple for simpletons to get web content onto their HDTV, and after snagging YouTube support last December, the box has finally nailed down a partnership that will bring bona fide films into households. Sonic Solutions, which has certainly been on a tear of late pushing its CinemaNow platform, has agreed to let VuNow users purchase CinemaNow programming, which includes material from over 250 content providers.

MiFi Gets an API: A Wifi Hotspot In Your Pocket, With Apps

The product that used to be a personal wifi hotspot in your pocket will now become an API-enabled connectivity hub with apps. The MiFi portable multi-person wireless router that we first wrote about in December and joined a chorus of positive reviews for in June now allows outside developers to write network-leveraging applications for the battery powered device. Sponsor Device manufacturer Novatel Wireless announced the availability of the Application Programming Interface today for both US and European models.

Open Source for America: The New Government Accountability

More than 70 major companies, academic institutions and high profile technologists have launched a campaign to educate US government agencies about the benefits of open source technology. Announced earlier at the O’Reilly Open Source Convention , groups such as Google, RedHat, Novell, Linux, Mozilla, Sun Microsystems and the Electronic Frontiers Foundation have teamed up to create Open Source For America . The joint effort is a coalition aimed at lobbying the US Federal government to consider using open-source software over proprietary code

Open Source and Social Media: Community, Collaboration, Freedom

To most people, the term “open source” immediately conjures an image of two geeks sitting in a dark room (probably a basement) — curtains drawn, McDonald’s remains strewn across the desk, and 42 oz sodas within arms’ reach — coding away at their computers, listening to Linkin Park or a game soundtrack. People automatically associate it with endless lines of code, back-end technology, server rooms, computer science labs, and experimental (read: unsafe and buggy) technology. In reality, open-source software provides stable solutions, created by people and for people and used by companies of all sizes.

Using PHP and Apache mod_xsendfile (X-Sendfile) : Managed download

I come up with this idea after realizing that downloading on my Youtube online video downloader and converter doesn’t support download accelerator (only one part/thread) and doesn’t support resuming paused download. Personally I didn’t like this because my internet connection is not dedicated and not too fast (well, it’s common on my country). I’m using PHP to serve the converted file to users.

Enabling cURL on XAMPP (Windows)

In my previous post, I’ve written tutorial how to enable mod_rewrite and .htaccess on XAMPP for Windows . In this tutorial, we will make our XAMPP more like common *NIX web server by enabling php-cURL extension. Actually it’s incredibly easy, follow this step: edit c:xamppphpphp.ini Look for this line: ;extension=php_curl.dll remove that ” ; “, then save the file restart Apache (using XAMPP control center or Windows services.msc or command line) check your phpinfo() whether cURL is enabled or not, if it’s successfully enabled, you can see on this screenshot:
