LG’s XF1 500GB multimedia hard drive touts HDMI, shimmery case

Looking for an external hard drive with a flashy color-shifting case, reasonably stout multimedia credentials, and a website with an outrageously long flash intro? Look no further than LG’s XF1, a 500GB machine with a USB interface and HDMI output to stream some high-def content straight to your set — but at a maximum of 1080i. It’ll do AVI, Xvid, and MPEGs 1, 2, and 4 along with your typical audio codecs, but conspicuously absent on the video side are H.264 and MKV, meaning it’s not exactly the comprehensive playback device you might be looking for if you haven’t gotten around to standardizing your downloads to a single encoding

One Time in Bandcamp: Challenging MySpace Music

Bill Tancer, Hitwise GM of Global Research recently wrote about MySpace’s departure as a top traffic generator for entertainment and music sites. Says Tancer, “MySpace was the most significant contributor of traffic to entertainment – multimedia sites providing over 35% of traffic to the category…that percentage now hovers below 10%.” Sponsor And then on a related note, Wired’s Eliot Van Buskirk profiled SoundCloud as MySpace’s biggest music threat . While no one is arguing that MySpace has lost its grip as one of the leading music and entertainment destination traffic generators, I disagree with Van Buskirk’s choice in SoundCloud as the great equalizer

Microsoft to launch music streaming service "imminently," could tie-in with Xbox / Zune

While even bigwigs can fudge release numbers from time to time, the word “imminently” just carries a certain aura. Speaking with The Telegraph , executive producer of MSN Peter Bale confessed that Microsoft was “looking at launching a music streaming service imminently.” As in, maybe before the dawn of August. Bale added that it would be “a similar principle to Spotify,” but the outfit is still examining exactly how the business model would work

LaCie ups the LaCinema Rugged ante with new HD version

At first glance, you’d be hard-pressed to notice the difference between LaCie’s LaCinema Rugged HD and last year’s model , but sure enough, the middle square of that device definitely has “HD” ingrained into its genetic code, and if you can’t guess what that means, we’ll tell ya: 1080p output. Other than that aesthetic modification and the new peak resolution, there’s not a lot that’s changed — HDMI and composite output, USB 2.0 transfer, and a sizable number of supported codecs — but that’s not exactly a bad thing here

Ask The EXPERT: Reasons for Packet Loss [Video Over Enterprise]

A recent post to the Megaconference mailing list raised an issue, which I have encountered numerous times throughout my years in the video-over-IP business: “Does anyone know why a video conferencing endpoint has packet loss, and even connection break? Are there any network parameters which can cause this?” As this is a frequently asked question, I decided to dedicate a post to this issue, so here’s another edition of “ Ask the EXPERT “, featuring all you want to know about the reasons for packet loss. In Short When you are sending media – audio and/or video – over an IP network, what you are actually transmitting are packets.

Synology debuts compact DS409Slim four-bay NAS

Not interested in a do-it-all NAS / router / photo frame like D-Link’s DIR-685 ? Then you may want to consider Synology’s just-announced DS409Slim NAS, which keeps things nice and simple and, as you can see above, compact. Despite that size, however, you’ll still get four bays for some 2.5-inch drives of your choice (up to 2TB total), along with some standard issue NAS specs like a 1.2GHz Marvell processor, 128MB of RAM, a pair of USB ports, and a single eSATA port — not to mention the usual DLNA certification and support for UPnP, among other media-friendly features.

NVIDIA Tegra smartphone due from a "top five" manufacturer before 2010?

If you want to get HD in your handheld, NVIDIA’s Tegra processor is the hot way to do it at the moment, and we’ve got reasonably concrete sounding rumors from disparate sources that a handset containing one of the chips is currently under development by a “top five” smartphone builder (we’re guessing it’s not Apple), and that it’ll be out sometime before the end of the year, selling at T-Mobile and AT&T for just $199.

Paper desktop speakers rock you like a handcrafted hurricane

Like my grandmother always says, sometimes the best gadgets are the ones you build yourself — with kits imported from Japan, purchased at places like Fred Flare. Princeton’s Paper Speaker kit comes with a pair of 1W stereo speakers, a USB connection, paste, and a paper template for building a retro desktop sound system. Three designs are available — take your pick from a cabinet record player, a component stereo system, or an old school boom box.
