MSI’s new CX420, CR420 and CR720 laptops put Intel’s new processors to good, workaday use

Smell that? That’s a smell of a real man’s budget computer, doing real manly things like task processing and pixel churning. MSI’s new CX420, CR420 and CR720 laptops aren’t much for looks, but under the hood you can find new-gen Core i Series processors across the board and ATI Radeon HD5470 graphics in the CX420 (pictured).

Open Thread: What’s Your Favorite Tech Nonprofit/Philanthropic Company?

A while ago, I wrote a rather condemning post on how most “social media for social good” efforts were heavy on social media activities but came up short on actual social good. Still, there are organizations such as Kiva , The Extraordinaires or SocialVibe and many others that do turn user microactions and technology to affect change and do good in very tangible ways

Apple iPad: bashed by bloggers around the web

If you’ve been browsing around, you’ll probably have noticed a lot of adverse reaction to the Apple iPad – at least among the geeks … The amount of user-generated hype for Apple’s new tablet computer was so vast that almost anything was likely to be a let-down, so the immediate backlash ( ipad sucks ) is hardly a surprise. The iPad turned out to be, at bottom, an iPod Touch with a big screen. It failed to offer a magical new 3D interface, or an OLED screen, or a built-in projector, or any other revolutionary features.

Apple’s iPad is designed to be a bridge device between the smartphone and the PC/Mac—a tablet-shaped computer that allows users to access data like the iPod touch and iPhone, including streamlined Safari web browser, e-mail, and iPhone OS … but the answer appears to be that its aluminum body will work as a heat sink, and the chips inside are essentially smartphone-class mobile processors that don’t give off as much heat or consume as much energy as laptop components .

TLEMsafe Helps Surgeons Prep for Orthopedic Operations

Researchers from a European project to develop a virtual model of the human lower musculoskeletal system have unveiled some of the capabilities already created that can help surgeons plan for complicated orthopedic procedures. Under the leadership of the University of Twente, the TLEMsafe (Twente Lower Extremity Model) virtual reality system renders individual functional models of legs using patients’ own MRI scans. Surgeons can then try out procedures on these virtual models to see what the appropriate course of action should be.

Three Things Apple Needs To Do To Make Its Tablet A Breakthrough …

That means the tablet must be introduced with a family of co-devices (not accessories , please don’t marginalize them by calling them that) that will make the device itself more flexible and therefore valuable. We’re talking Bluetooth keyboards, sure, … I think what you’re looking for already exists in the numerous tablet computers available running Windows 7.

Network Security Podcast, Episode 182

Somehow we’ve managed to get Martin, Rich, and me together on a fairly regular basis. Pretty impressive (superhero-like, even). It seems as though I was full of more beans than usual, taking a few playful jabs at Rich (something about goat smuggling) and Martin (butterfly tattoos, if I recall correctly).

Update on Recent Microsoft 0day (CVE-2010-0249)

Here’s a quick update on CVE-2010-0249 , aka the Aurora exploit.  A few days ago exploit code was made public .  Since then malware authors have been customizing the exploits payload to install their own malicious creations.  Much of the field telemetry we’ve been receiving has been coming from McAfee users in China visiting websites in China.  Some users have been directed to malicious sites from blog and forum posts, while other cases involve compromised web pages that use multiple javascripts and iframes to pull in the malicious content. The exploits are often served from subdomains of 3322.org and 8866.org.  A common filename is ie.html, which references what.jpg, which contains part of the exploit code (and not a JPEG image).  Some payloads seen download files named down.css and log.css, which are malware executables.  Those executables contain functionality to download other malware, including: Artemis!629E2332CFDA – Generic PWS.y!bsk Artemis!78043EBA321B – PWS-Mmorpg!la Artemis!911BCF95C022 – PWS-OnlineGames.gx Generic Downloader.x!coe Generic Dropper!byp Generic PWS.y!bsk PWS-Mmorpg!la Suspect-02!50CB7D4BB04E – Generic Dropper.hi Suspect-26!4EBF601DCBF6 – PWS-Mmorpg!la Suspect-26!6D89EB2792F7 – PWS-Mmorpg!hb Suspect-26!B01B63F88994 – PWS-Mmorpg!la Given that exploit code is readily available, this is likely the tip-of-the tip of the iceberg in terms of the domains and malware we are likely to see over the next few weeks (and we can expect to see new exploit and related malware variants for many months, if not years, to come)

Visual Communications Done By Software? Not That Fast [VoIP Survivor]

If you have been reading my thoughts here on the blog for some time now, you might be aware that I am a real supporter of hardware-based video telephony: I believe that if you truly want to do High Definition video calling, you must have a physical terminal and not a software client on your PC. Well, in the past few weeks I had my doubts about that statement above – PCs are getting cheaper all the time and their processing power is increasing, so why not just base our video conferencing infrastructure on software based clients
